Happy Saturday!
So, I was in the middle of writing a post for Monday about an imminent new release and suddenly realized I still hadn’t written this morning’s post. Crap!
Some of the research for that post had me looking at something that happened in the late spring of 1980. As most of you know, that fall was when I started with McDonald’s, and it hit me that I could have a look back at 1980. Found some pretty interesting stuff.
First off, speaking about McDonald’s, would you believe that the Big Mac was only 75¢? According to Google, today it sells for $4.35. And does anybody remember those styrofoam cartons they used to come in?
Also, in 1980, those of us who were alive saw for the first time: Rubik’s Cube, Cabbage Patch Kids, Trivial Pursuit, Post-It Notes, and the Sony Walkman. That was also the year that Ronald Reagan was elected President of the United States, Mount St. Helens erupted (although I don’t think those two events are related). It was also the year that Mark David Chapman killed John Lennon.
If you were grocery shopping in 1980, you would definitely remember the old, manual cash registers. You would also have found these prices:
Milk: $1.59 per gallon
Apples: 39¢ per pound
Bacon: $1.69 per pound
Ground Beef: $1.39 per pound
Beef Roast: $1.49 per pound
Potatoes: 20¢ per pound
Tomatoes: 39¢ per pound
Kraft Singles (12 pack): $1.47
Heinz Ketchup: 99¢
Ivory Dish Soap: 79¢
Miracle Whip: $1.27
Skippy Peanut Butter: $1.49
Heinz Pork and Beans: 40¢
Ritz Crackers: $1.59
Ah, the good old days! If you want to give yourself a shock, have a look at what any of those groceries cost today.
Have a great weekend!
